On the wings of a butterfly
“Wake up! Wake up you little fuck, don’t you leave me here alone!!!”, cried Ayako hysterically, holding Kaori in her arms. He was unconscious when they took him to the hospital, he stayed in a deep coma for ten months. He was dreaming for ten months, he could hear everything people were saying around him, but he could not react in any way. He was a prisoner in his own body, unable to scream for help, a helpless young boy lying on the hospital bed, kept in life by machines. He was having the most horrible nightmares, a voice kept telling him that he has to die, he tricked death once, but he cannot do it twice. He was in terrible pain, he was going mad, he wanted to get up and tell Ayako that her comforting voice is the only thing that keeps him alive, he wished he could give a sign, move an inch or open his eyes for a second at least. It was impossible…
Ayako started having nightmares as well every night. She could barely sleep and when she did fall asleep all she could see in her dreams was how Kaori accidentally injected a larger amount of the heroin and left her alone. She heard the same voice telling her that she has to die and she has to kill Kaori too.
They did everything together, they were like Siamese twins. A few months ago they wanted to die together, this life wasn’t worth living. One night they drove to the lookout point to see the lights of the city, it was so beautiful when they drifted away on the luscious waves that only heroin could offer them. They injected it, closed their eyes having the most surreal dreams and hearing the trashiest songs in their heads. The city was like a huge concrete building, the lights were like tiny marbles floating in the air… This moment was perfect, it seemed that it will last forever, it seemed that they wouldn’t have to wake up ever again and just continue having this fabulous dream for all eternity.
All their hopes vanished in thin air when Ayako realized that Kaori was lying unconscious next to the car, she was still numb, she needed all her strength to call the ambulance…
Ayako went to the hospital every day and looked at her love, he was still beautiful, he was in a deep sleep, she thought … but as the days passed and as the nightmares became worse, Ayako decided to sneak into the hospital at night and disconnect the machines that kept Kaori alive. She took a handful of pills with her, planning to die with the love of her life and make their dreams finally come true.
She got in Kaori’s room without getting noticed by the nurses who were on the night shift. She took the pills and disconnected the machines… She put her palm on Kaori’s heart and waited until it stopped then she closed her eyes, laid next to her beautiful boy on the hospital bed, took him in her arms and told him with her last breath that she doesn’t regret a single thing and that they will meet soon.
In the morning the nurses found Kaori’s bed empty, with wrinkled sheets and an empty bottle of pills…
